Neiphiu Rio was born on November 11, 1950 in Tuphema village of Kohima district. He is the son of Late Gulholli Rio and belongs to the Angami Naga tribe. Neiphiu Rio had entered politics in his student life itself. He was the president of the youth wing of the United Democratic Front in 1974. He joined the Congress in 1989. After this, in 2002, he left the Congress and started taking forward the Naga People’s Front. In 2003, he became the Chief Minister for the first time by removing Jamir. In 2008, when President’s rule was imposed in the state, he had to step down from the post of Chief Minister, but after two months elections were held and he returned to power. In the next state election in 2013, the NPF won a landslide majority and Rio was re-elected as Chief Minister for a third term. He contested the 2018 state assembly elections on a pre-poll agreement with the BJP. The alliance won 30 seats and formed the government with the support of 18 regional parties and 12 BJP and 2 NPP MLAs, ending the NPF’s 15-year rule in the state.With this he has become the Chief Minister of Nagaland for the fifth time.
