History of World Food and Safety Day
In July 2017, a proposal was made to celebrate World Food and Safety Day in the 40th session of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) conference. WHO expressed its support on this and after this the proposal was placed in the United Nations General Assembly. On 20 December 2018, the United Nations General Assembly approved this proposal and announced to celebrate World Food and Safety Day on 7 June. On 7 June 2019, this day was celebrated for the first time in collaboration with WHO and the Food and Agriculture Organization. Since then, World Food Safety Day is celebrated every year on this date.
What is its purpose?
According to WHO, every year lakhs of people die due to contaminated food. The biggest crisis arises for children under the age of 5 because their immunity is very weak. In such a situation, it is very important to make people aware about food. With this objective, every year WHO and Food and Agriculture Organization together celebrate this day.
