National Fisheries Day is celebrated every year on 10th July to recognize the contribution of fish farmers, aquaculture industry professionals and other stakeholders in the fisheries sector of the country.
This day is celebrated to remember the contribution of Professor Dr. Hiralal Choudhary and his colleague Dr. K.H. Alikunhi in the Indian fisheries sector. They successfully demonstrated the technique of induced breeding in Indian major carp through hypophysation at the then Pond Culture Division of CIFRI (presently Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture, CIFA, Bhubaneswar) in Cuttack, Odisha on July 10, 1957.
This achievement revolutionized inland aquaculture. The purpose of celebrating this day is to recognize the contribution made by fish farmers, aquapreneurs (businessmen in the aquaculture sector) and fishermen in the development of the fisheries sector of the country.
The aim of this day is to create an ecosystem to think collectively and discuss ways to sustainably manage our fisheries resources. The contribution of fish farmers is vital in meeting the growing demand for fish protein, creating employment opportunities and contributing to the food security of the country. On this day, various activities such as seminars, workshops, exhibitions and interactive sessions are organized across the country to disseminate knowledge, share experiences and promote collaboration among stakeholders. Experts and professionals from the fisheries sector provide information about the latest developments, research findings and emerging trends in aquaculture.
