People who do not vote cannot be expected to pay taxes to a government that is not accountable to them. People who live in poverty and hunger cannot be expected to pay exorbitant house rents to the government and local authorities. We provide the veins of agriculture and industry. We work in gold mines, diamonds and coal, farms and industry, for which we receive pitiful wages. Why should we enrich those who steal the produce of our sweat and blood? who exploit us and deprive us of the right to organise trade unions? …
67 years in the service of humanity…
It has been told to me that a warrant has been issued for my arrest and that the police are looking for me. … Any serious politician will understand that under the present conditions in this country, it is naivety and crime to seek cheap martyrdom by handing oneself over to the police. We have an important programme before us and it must be carried out very seriously and without delay.
I have chosen the other path, which is much more difficult and involves greater risk and suffering than sitting in prison. I have had to separate myself from my beloved wife and children, my mother and sisters, and live like a bandit in my own country. I have had to close my business, give up my profession and live in poverty and misery, as many of my people are doing. … I will fight the Government shoulder to shoulder with you, inch by inch and mile by mile, until victory is achieved. What are you going to do? Will you join us, or will you cooperate with the government’s efforts to suppress the claims and aspirations of your people? Or will you remain silent and neutral in a matter of life and death for my people, our people? For my part, I have made my choice. I will not leave South Africa, nor will I surrender. Only through hardship, sacrifice and radical action can freedom be won. Struggle is my life. I will fight for freedom until the end of my life.
How did this day come about?
