The historic slogan of the Quit India Movement was given by ‘Yusuf Meher Ali’. The British were badly defeated in the Second World War. After this defeat, the dominance of the British started decreasing in the world. Keeping this in mind, Mahatma Gandhi started the Quit India Movement. The Quit India Movement is one of the biggest movements in Indian history. On August 8, 2023, India has completed 82 years of the Quit India Movement, which is also called the ‘August Revolution’.
The Quit India Movement was truly a mass movement, in which millions of common Indians participated. A large number of youth were attracted towards the Quit India movement. They left their school and college studies and became a part of this movement. This movement played a big role in the independence of India. The Quit India Movement was started by Mahatma Gandhi on 8 August 1942.
Mahatma Gandhi called for an end to British rule and started the Quit India Movement in the session of the ‘All India Congress Committee’ in Mumbai. Let us tell you that Gandhiji gave the slogan of “Do or Die” in his historic speech at Gwalia Tank Maidan, the place which is currently known as ‘August Kranti Maidan’.
One of the main reasons for the start of the Quit India Movement was the failure of the “Cripps Mission”. This mission was sent under the leadership of Stafford Cripps to solve the question related to the creation of a new constitution and self-governance in India. This mission failed because it offered Dominion Status with partition and not complete independence for India. Indians wanted complete independence. Therefore, this mission was strongly opposed by Indians. Seeing the demand of the general public, Mahatma Gandhi started the Quit India Movement.
The Quit India Movement had awakened a new spirit for the independence of India among the people of India.
This movement told the British that their rule in India would not last long.
This movement inspired the people of India to rise above caste, religion and language and unite. This movement connected every section of the society with the freedom struggle.
Due to this movement, women also came out of their homes and took part in the freedom struggle.
