India celebrated first National Space Day on August 23.

Yesterday on the 23rd of August, India celebrated its inaugural National Space Day, commemorating the historic Chandrayaan-3 mission marking the country’s successful landing on the lunar South Pole, a first for any nation at an event in New Delhi’s Bharat Mandapam.
The inaugural National Space Day was a grand affair graced by the presence of the President of India, Draupadi Murmu, along with the ISRO Chairman, Dr. S Somanath, and the Minister of State for Space, Dr. Jitendra Singh.
On the occasion, President presented awards to winners of Robotics Challenge and Bharatiya Antariksh Hackathon. A month long competitions organized by ISRO under theme ‘Touching Lives while Touching the Moon: India’s Space Saga’.
Exhibition by Ministries, private industries, new space startups and academic institutions was also held on this occasion. These events streamed live on ISRO’s official website and YouTube channel. During the Ceremony, ISRO chief Dr. S Somanath presented an ambitious roadmap for space exploration for the next two decades which included plans for more lunar mission, an indigenous space station, a new rocket, as well as placing a man on the moon by 2040.

On August 23, 2023,India became the fourth country to land on the moon and the first to reach its southern polar region. To honour this historic event Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi announced August 23 as National Space Day.
