World Teachers’ Day is celebrated on 5 October under the aegis of the United Nations.

On this day, teachers in general and certain working and retired teachers are honored for their special contribution.

It is celebrated by the United Nations to commemorate the joint meeting of UNESCO and the International Labor Organization in the year 1966, in which the status of teachers was discussed and suggestions were presented for it.

Therefore, it is being celebrated in more than 100 countries every year since 1994 and thus in the year 2022 it will be the 28th World Teachers’ Day.

An organization called Education International is going to celebrate this occasion with the slogan “Unite for quality education”.

Another organization is preparing to celebrate it with the theme “Invest in the future, invest in teachers”. What is the significance of World Teachers’ Day?
Let’s start with a little background. In 1966, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, or UNESCO, passed the ILO/UNESCO Recommendation Concerning the Status of Teachers. This Recommendation established standards regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers. It set standards for their training and continuing education, recruitment, employment, and teaching and learning conditions.

Now, UNESCO honors the anniversary of the Recommendation by celebrating World Teachers’ Day in partnership with UNICEF, UNDP, the International Labor Organization, and Education International. Around the world, you can celebrate the protection of teachers’ rights and status as well as attract newcomers to the field. The day also honors teachers in light of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 on education, which sees access to education and quality teachers as crucial to meeting the UN’s Education 2030 Agenda.

How is World Teachers’ Day celebrated?
Although plans for the 2024 World Teachers’ Day celebration have not been announced as of the time of this writing, you can follow updates and announcements on the UNESCO website.
Every year on October 5, we celebrate World Teachers’ Day. It is a time to remember the special teachers who supported us when we were students and express gratitude to those who inspired us in the classroom. Not only this, it is also a day for you to realize that now you too can have the same impact on students!
