The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction is observed every year on 13 October. The day celebrates how people and communities around the world are reducing the risk of disasters and raising awareness about the importance of curbing the risks they face. In this article, you will learn about the significance and history of this day.
About International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, 2024
The day is observed on 13 October to educate people around the world about how they can reduce the risk of natural disasters, thereby reducing economic loss and loss of human life.
The theme of this day in 2024 was ‘Disaster Risk Governance’. It was kept in view of the high number of deaths caused by the Kovid-19 pandemic.
Good disaster risk governance is measured by the number of lives saved, the number of people affected by disasters reduced and the economic losses averted.
There is a dire need for a clear vision and plans for public well-being in the face of situations like COVID-19 and changing climate conditions.
This requires appropriate national and local strategies for disaster risk reduction.
This was agreed upon by UN member states when they adopted the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction in 2015.
Good national and local strategies for disaster risk reduction
It is imperative to work on strategies that are inclusive, that is, they not only deal with single hazards such as floods and storms, but also address systemic risks posed by zoonotic diseases, climate shocks and environmental disruption.
These strategies include multi-sectoral, linking policies in areas such as land use, building codes, public health, education, agriculture, environmental protection, energy, water resources, poverty alleviation and climate change adaptation.

Background of International Disaster Risk Reduction Day
The United Nations General Assembly, through a resolution in 1989, designated the second Wednesday of October as the International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction.
But on 21 December 2009, the Assembly passed a new resolution in which it was decided to celebrate this day on 13 October. The name of this day was changed to International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction.
