World Standards Day is celebrated every year on 14 October all over the world. The purpose of this day is to recognize and appreciate the contribution of experts and organizations who play an important role in the development of international standards.

These standards create a common framework for global trade, product quality, consumer safety, and innovative technologies, thereby promoting stability and harmony in the world.

Purpose of World Standards Day

Standards set the norms of quality and safety of any product, service, or process. These standards help industries, governments, trade organizations, and consumers to ensure that products and services are designed as per the requirements and meet the needs of the users.

The main objective of World Standards Day is:

To spread awareness about the importance of standards. To highlight the role of global standards for trade and industry. To honour the scientists, engineers, and technical experts who work towards developing these standards.

History of World Standards Day*

World Standards Day started on 14 October 1946, when representatives from 25 countries gathered at a conference in London. The purpose of this conference was to discuss the importance of international standardisation. This resulted in the establishment of the International Organization for Standardisation (ISO) in 1947.

However, World Standards Day was first celebrated in 1970. Since then, this day is celebrated every year across the world to focus on the importance of standardisation and its requirements. Apart from ISO, two other major organisations, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) also play a major role in the recognition of this day.

Why is World Standards Day important?

Global harmonization: Standards ensure that products and services in different countries are produced under the same quality and safety standards, thereby facilitating international trade. Consumer protection: Standards help in providing safe and high-quality goods and services to consumers. Promotion of innovation: Standards provide a foundation for making new technologies and processes acceptable. Environmental protection: Many standards help in reducing environmental impacts, thereby encouraging sustainable development. The importance of World Standards Day is increasing every year, as our lives are becoming more dependent on technology, trade, and global cooperation. Standards provide a common platform for all those who want to use quality and safe products around the world.
