Jammu and Kashmir Merger Day is celebrated every year on 26 October. This day is declared a public holiday in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. On this day in 1947, Maharaja Hari Singh of Jammu and Kashmir signed the document of merger with India. This document is called the Instrument of Accession.

When India was becoming independent, the British Raj offered all the existing princely states and monarchies to merge with either India or Pakistan in terms of geographical conditions. Then Maharaja Hari Singh of Jammu and Kashmir declared independence, that is, he said that ‘neither will we join India nor Pakistan, but will maintain our independent identity.’ However, after that such situations arose that they had to merge Kashmir with India.

Maharaja Hari Singh ascended the throne of Kashmir in 1925. He used to spend most of his time hunting in the racecourse of Bombay and the large forests of his princely state. His biggest opponent in Kashmir at that time was Sheikh Abdullah. Abdullah was born in the house of a shawl seller. He did his M.Sc from Aligarh Muslim University. Apart from being sharp in studies, he was also a great speaker. He knew how to present his views with logic and facts.

Sheikh Abdullah first worked as a teacher in a private school, then jumped into politics. He started raising questions as to why Muslims are being treated with discrimination in this state, why despite being in majority they are lagging behind in jobs and other things.

In 1932, he formed the All Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Conference to give voice to the growing discontent against the Maharaja. After six years, he changed its name to National Conference, in which people from Hindu and Sikh communities also started joining. At the same time, Abdullah also grew close to Jawaharlal Nehru. Both were unanimous on Hindu-Muslim unity and socialism. National Conference and Congress started getting closer.
