Biography

Elected by the Bharatiya Janata Party, Giriraj Singh was born on 9 September 1952 in Barhiya, Lakhisarai district of Bihar. His father’s name is Ramavtar Singh and mother’s name is Tara Devi, who has passed away. His wife’s name is Uma Sinha and they have a daughter. Giriraj Singh has completed his education from Begusarai. After graduating from Magadh University in 1971, he started his business in Begusarai by taking the agency of pump set of a well-known company.

Political Career

Giriraj Singh met BJP leader Kailashpati Mishra during a wedding ceremony in Begusarai. Taking inspiration from him, he decided to join BJP.  He then moved to Patna in 1985-86 and joined BJYM (Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha).  In 1990, Giriraj Singh became the General Secretary of the State BJYM along with he became the in-charge of BJYM in Begusarai, Samastipur and Khagaria.  After this, he became a member of the Bihar Legislative Council in 2002 and till 2014 he was the Legislative Councilor. During his tenure, Giriraj Singh became the Minister of Cooperation from 2008 to 2010 and then Minister of Animal and Fisheries Resources from 2010 to 2013 in the cabinet expansion of the Chief Minister of Bihar Nitish Kumar.  Giriraj Singh was elected as MP from Nawada for the first time in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.  After this, during the expansion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet in 2017, Giriraj Singh was given the responsibility of Minister of State with independent charge at the Center for the first time.  After this, he was elected as MP from Begusarai in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, after which he got the responsibility of the Ministry of Panchayati Raj on 30 May 2019.
