Jaipur Starting his political career in the 1980s, Bhupesh Baghel is currently the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh and a prominent leader of the Indian National Congress. He has also served as a Cabinet Minister in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh and played a crucial role in winning several state legislative assembly elections for his party. Born on August 23, 1961, in Durg, Madhya Pradesh (now part of Chhattisgarh), Baghel comes from an agricultural background, which instilled in him the courage to work hard and make sound decisions from an early age.
Baghel embarked on his political journey in the 1980s and later joined the Indian Youth Congress in 1985, becoming the President of Durg district. In 1993, he contested and won elections from the Patan constituency for the first time. He continued his political involvement and held various positions within the Indian National Congress. In 2000, when Chhattisgarh was formed as a separate state, Baghel became the first Minister of Revenue, Public Health, Engineering, and Relief Work, holding the position until 2003. He became a member of the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly in 2003 and remained an active opposition leader until 2008.
Despite facing defeats in Lok Sabha elections in 2004 and 2009, Baghel persevered in his political journey. In 2014, he was appointed as the State President of the Indian National Congress, and in the 2018 state legislative assembly elections, he led the Congress party to victory. Baghel secured a win from the Patan constituency in the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly elections of 2018. After 15 years of leading the opposition in the Chhattisgarh state assembly, Baghel emerged victorious once again in 2018, winning from the Patan constituency and becoming the Chief Minister, defeating Raman Singh of the BJP.
