Kangra district is situated in the northwest of Himachal Pradesh. Kangra was known as Trigarta in ancient times, whose establishment is believed to be before the Mahabharata war. This princely state was founded by Bhumi Chand, whose capital was Multan (present-day Pakistan). Susharma, the 234th king of this generation, established a fort in Kangra of Jalandhar Trigarta and made it his capital. At present Una, Hamirpur, and Mandi districts are situated in the south of Kangra. It is bordered by Kullu and Lahaul-Spiti in the east, Chamba in the north, and Punjab State in the west.
The Dhauladhar mountain range passes through Kullu and crosses the Bhangal region and enters Kangra district. Dal, Kareri (natural), and Pong (artificial) lakes are located in Kangra. Kangra’s “Kangdi Dham” is a traditional food. The cuisine of Himachal Pradesh is mainly based on the climate and topography of the state. Kangri Dham is cooked only by Botis (a special caste of Brahmins who are hereditary cooks). There are many tourist places to visit in Kangra such as Jwala Ji Temple, Masroor Rock Cut Temple, Andreta Pottery Village, Kangra Fort, etc.
Kangra district is also very important in the politics of Himachal Pradesh. Whichever party has got an edge in this district, the chair of power is in its hands. This district with 15 assembly constituencies is the largest in the state in terms of population. This is where the way to capture power is made. So both the major national parties try hard to capture this district. This is the reason why the cabinet has the maximum number of members from this district. Rajput caste is 34 percent, OBC (Other Backward Classes) 32 percent, Brahmin 18 percent, and Scheduled Caste-Tribe (SC-ST) 20 percent in the general category in the voter percentage in the district.
