Paras Mali.
International Sign Language Day is celebrated every year on September 23. The celebration originates from the 2017 United Nations General Assembly resolution A/RES/72/16, which recognizes September 23 as International Sign Language Day. According to the United Nations, the resolution establishing the day acknowledges that early access to sign language and services, including quality education available in sign language, is important for the growth and development of the deaf person and is critical for the achievement of internationally agreed development goals. It recognizes the importance of preserving sign languages as part of linguistic and cultural diversity.
Introduction to Sign Language and Indian Sign Language
According to the World Federation of the Deaf, there are more than 70 million deaf people worldwide. More than 80% of them live in developing countries. Collectively, they use over 300 different sign languages. The United Nations defines sign languages as full-fledged natural languages, which are structurally different from spoken languages. Indian Sign Language (ISL) is the native natural visual-manual language of the deaf community of India and is used by both the deaf and hearing communities.
History of Sign Language Day
International Sign Language Day was first celebrated in 2018 as part of the International Week of the Deaf. Since then, every year September 23 is celebrated as International Sign Language Day across the world. In India, we call it Sign Language Day and celebrate it on September 23 every year since 2018. September 23 was also selected for Sign Language Day due to the fact that the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) was founded on this day in 1951.
Importance of Sign Language Day
The United Nations General Assembly has declared September 23 as International Sign Language Day to raise awareness of the importance of sign languages in the full realization of the human rights of deaf people.
