Paras Mali.

Every year 21st October is celebrated as National Police Memorial Day across the country. In view of the sacrifices of the police personnel and their contribution to the country, in January 1960, in the annual conference of Inspectors General of Police, it was decided to celebrate 21st October as Police Day every year. Since then this day is celebrated every year.

Every year 21st October is celebrated in our country as National Police Commemoration Day. It was decided to celebrate this day for the first time in the year 1960, after which this day is celebrated every year and the martyrdom of the policemen who were martyred while protecting the border of our country is remembered and they are given respect.

Why was Police Memorial Day started

Three battalions of Indian policemen were responsible for the security of India’s 2500 mile long border with China in Tibet. The first two battalions returned after completing their patrol but the third battalion did not return from the patrol. The Chinese army ambushed this contingent of police personnel posted in the Hot Springs area of north-eastern Ladakh. In this, 10 of our soldiers were martyred while 7 soldiers were injured.
This battalion was being led by DSP Shri Karam Singh. Due to lack of hiding place, 10 soldiers including DSP Shri Karam Singh were martyred while 7 soldiers were taken hostage by the Chinese army.
23 days after this incident, on 13 November 1959, the Chinese army returned the bodies of those soldiers to India. Karam Singh was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra for bravery. In view of the sacrifice of the police personnel and the contribution made to the country, it was decided in January 1960 in the annual conference of Inspectors General of Police to celebrate 21 October every year as Police Day. On this day, the State Police, Central Security Forces, and Paramilitary Forces along with the Police Force celebrate this day together.
