The birth anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi, the sixth Prime Minister of India, is celebrated as Sadbhavana Diwas on 20 August. The meaning of Sadbhavana in English is ‘Harmony’. Also known as Harmony day, the day aims to encourage peace, national integration and communal harmony among all religions. Marking the occasion, several cultural programs and tournaments are organized across the country. People work together and take a pledge to establish peace and harmony around them.
Sadbhavana Diwas was first observed in 1992, almost a year after Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated in a suicide bomb attack in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu.

The modern outlook of Rajiv Gandhi was reflected in his contribution to the progress of the country. He proposed a National Education Policy in 1986 to modernize and expand higher education in India. Rajiv Gandhi also established a central government-based institution, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV), in the same year to develop the rural part of the society by providing free residential education from class 6th to class 12th. Subsequently, the Mahanagar Telephone Nigam (MTNL) was established in 1986 as a result of the efforts of Rajiv Gandhi. He also established Public Call Offices (PCOs) to extend telephone service to remote areas. The primary objective is to foster a sense of national integration and to promote positive interaction between different religions and cultures. Sadbhavna Diwas is significant because it promotes peaceful coexistence among individuals and urges them to shun violence. The objective of Sadbhavna Diwas is to create social peace, solidarity, brotherhood and love in the society as a whole.
On the occasion of Sadbhavna Diwas, all the countrymen take a pledge. This pledge is taken at the function of the Congress party. It is said in this pledge that every citizen of the country, regardless of caste, religion, region and language, will keep humanity above all and will love each other as himself. At the same time, while protecting the Constitution of India, it will try to reduce the distance between all religions.
