Born in 1961 in a Hindu family in Luwansangbam Mamang Leikai, Manipur, Biren Singh was interested in football since childhood. When he was 18 years old, he was selected in the Border Security Forces (BSF) football team during a match in Imphal, the capital of Manipur. In 2002, he joined the Democratic Revolutionary People’s Party, a regional party in Manipur. State assembly elections were to be held in 2002 itself. His party fielded 23 candidates in the elections, out of which only two were able to reach the House by winning. One of these two winning candidates was N. Biren Singh. He (Heingang) had become MLA from Heingang assembly seat, and is still an MLA from the same seat. After football and journalism, Biren Singh’s third innings in politics was also a hit.

Was successful in winning the very first election. This was the period when veteran Congress leader and state Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh’s N. Eyes fell on Biren Singh. Biren Singh supported the Congress government from outside and later formally joined the Congress. In 2007, he contested elections on Congress ticket and was successful in reaching the assembly again. This time he got huge portfolios like Irrigation, Flood and Sports Ministry. Singh retained the constituency for the third consecutive time in the 2012 assembly elections. In September 2016, he resigned from the Manipur Assembly after rebelling against the then Chief Minister of the state, Okram Ibobi Singh. Singh joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in October 2016. In 2017, Singh contested the assembly elections from Hingang seat and won, retaining the seat for the fourth consecutive time. He was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Manipur on March 15, 2017, becoming the first BJP leader to become CM in the state.
