Naveen Patnaik is an Indian politician and author who is the current and 14th Chief Minister of Odisha and has been representing the Hinjili assembly constituency since 2000.
Navin Patnaik was born on 16 October 1946 in Cuttack, Odisha. His father, Biju Patnaik, who was a politician as well as a businessman, served twice as the Chief Minister of Odisha. Naveen Patnaik came out as a writer after completing his education and then he had nothing to do with politics. As an author, he has published 3 books so far.

Naveen Patnaik joined politics in the year 1996 after the death of his father. In 1996, he was elected to the 11th Lok Sabha in a by-election for the Aska assembly constituency, as a Janata Dal candidate. Later, with the help of the BJP, Naveen Patnaik broke away from the Janata Dal and formed his own party, the Biju Janata Dal BJD) was formed. In the next year’s Lok Sabha elections, his party forged an alliance with the BJP and Patnaik joined Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government as Minister of Steel and Mines.

In 2000 assembly election, BJD won majority of seats in alliance with BJP in Odisha assembly election, Patnaik resigned from Union cabinet and took oath as Chief Minister of Odisha and since then he is Chief Minister of Odisha. His alliance with BJP lasted till 2009. Naveen Patnaik also holds the record of being the Chief Minister for the second longest tenure in the country. CM Naveen Patnaik has broken the record of West Bengal’s Jyoti Basu who held the post of CM for 23 years and 137 days.
