Chandra Kumar was born on May 8, 1944 in Jawali, District Kangra. Chandra Kumar has studied at Himachal Pradesh University and Punjab University. Chaudhary Chandra Kumar’s son Neeraj Bharti has also been an MLA from this seat in the year 2012. Chaudhary Chandra Kumar is known for solving the problems of backward classes and their upliftment. Chaudhary Chandra Kumar started his life as a teacher. He has been a teacher of Geography at the famous St.Beed’s College, Shimla.
In the year 1977, Chaudhary Chandra Kumar contested as an MLA for the first time, but he had to face defeat in this election. After this, Chaudhary Chandra Kumar won as an MLA in the year 1982 and in the year 1985. Chaudhary Chandra Kumar once again had to face defeat in the 1990 elections, but Chandra Kumar made a comeback and won the assembly elections in the year 1993, year 1998 and year 2003.
Cabinet Minister Chandra Kumar has also been the Vice Chairman of Himachal Road Transport Corporation from 1982 to 1985. Chandra Kumar has also been the Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Health in the year 1984-85. He has worked as Minister of State with independent charge from the year 1985 to 1989. In the year 1989-90, after changing the department, he was given independent charge of the Horticulture, Agriculture, and Language and Culture Department. In the year 1993, he became a cabinet minister for the first time and was entrusted with the responsibility of the Minister of Technical Education along with IPH. Chaudhary Chandra Kumar has earlier worked with former Chief Minister Ramlal Thakur and former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh. He is the only cabinet minister who has experience of working with three chief ministers of the state. In the year 2004, Chaudhary Chandra Kumar also won as an MP from Kangra parliamentary constituency. In 2023, he was given the charge of Animal Husbandry Department and Agriculture Minister.
