How did the auto driver become the head of the state …

Jaipur: Eknath Shinde was born on 9 February 1964 in a Kshatriya Kunbi-Maratha family. Satara is his home district. Shinde came to Thane for studies. Studied till 11th standard here. After this, staying in the Wagle Estate area, he started driving an auto rickshaw. During this, he met Shiv Sena leader Anand Dighe. His political career started at the age of just 18 and Shinde started working as a common Shiv Sena worker, after working as a Shiv Sena worker for almost one and a half decade, Shinde stepped into electoral politics in 1997 Thane Nagar in 1997 Anand Dighe gave the corporator ticket to Shinde in the corporation elections. Shinde was successful in winning his first election. After this again in the year 2002, he became the corporator for the second time.

In the 2004 assembly elections, Shiv Sena gave ticket to Shinde from Thane assembly seat. Here also Shinde got victory. He defeated Manoj Shinde of Congress by more than 37 thousand votes. After this, in 2009, 2014 and 2019, Shinde reached the assembly by winning from the Kopri Pachhpakhadi seat in Thane district. Shinde was the Public Works Minister of the state in the Devendra Fadnavis government. After the 2019 assembly elections, Shinde was the frontrunner in the race for the post of chief minister. Aditya Thackeray himself proposed Shinde’s name in the Legislature Party meeting after the election and he was elected as the leader of the Shiv Sena Legislature Party. But Uddhav Thackeray’s name came forward under the pressure of Congress and NCP. After this Shinde came on the backfoot. In the Uddhav government, Shinde was the urban development minister of the state as well as the minister in charge of Thane district. It is said that Shinde was not happy with the alliance with Congress and NCP. After this the distance between him and Uddhav Thackeray started increasing.

In 2022, the alliance of Congress, NCP and Shiv Sena broke. After this Shiv Sena also got divided into two factions. One Shinde faction and one Uddhav faction. The MLAs of the Shinde faction forged an alliance with the BJP and on 30 June 2022, Shinde was sworn in as the 20th Chief Minister of Maharashtra. BJP stalwart and former chief minister Devendra Fadnavis was made deputy chief minister.
