Rohit Thakur, coming from the Berthata area of Jubbal – Kotkhai, was born in Shimla. Born on August 14, 1974, to father Jagdish Thakur and mother Sarita Thakur, Rohit Thakur was associated with politics at a very young age. His grandfather Thakur Ramlal was the Chief Minister of the state. Rohit Thakur studied BA Honors in Political Science. Following the footsteps of his grandfather, Rohit Thakur started his political journey with the Youth Congress. Rohit Thakur was a member of Himachal Pradesh Youth Congress State Executive from 2002 to 2004. From the year 2002 till now, Rohit Thakur is also a member of the Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee from Jubbal -Kotkhai. Meanwhile, from the year 2008 to the year 2011, he has also been the secretary of the Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee. Rohit Thakur’s grandfather Thakur Ramlal has been the chief minister of the state. Before this, Ramlal Thakur was also the health minister of the state. Although Rohit’s father did not actively play any role in politics. It was Rohit who carried forward the legacy of his grandfather. After the death of Thakur Ramlal, in the year 2003, he contested from Jubbal-Kotkhai for the first time and became a member of the Legislative Assembly.
After the year 2003, Rohit got victory in the assembly elections of the year 2012. After this, in the by-elections of the year 2021 and then in the assembly elections of the year 2022, Rohit Thakur once again won the assembly for the fourth time.
After their victory in the year 2012, Rohit Thakur was also given the responsibility of the Chief Parliamentary Secretary of the Horticulture Department from the year 2013 to the year 2017.
After winning the assembly elections in the year 2003, Rohit Thakur had to face defeat in the year 2007 and again in the year 2017.
In the new government formed in 2023, Rohit was given the charge of Education Minister.
