Kinnaur, the land of the legendary Kinnaur, is a district situated in the North East of Himachal Pradesh. Reckong Peo is the district headquarters of Kinnaur. Kinnaur State was a part of the princely state of Rampur Bushahr. Polyandry system is found here. The famous kings here were Pratampal, Chatarsingh and Kehri Singh, who was also known as ‘Ajan Bahu’. On November 13, 1914, the last ruler of the princely state of Bushahr, Raja Padmasingh, ascended the throne and ruled till 1947. In 1948, Bushahr State became a part of the Union Territory of Chief Commissioner’s Territory of Himachal Pradesh. Till 1960, the present Kinnaur district became a mini tehsil of Mahasu district.
On April 21, 1960, Kinnaur became the sixth district of Himachal Pradesh. Kinnaur is also known as the land of gods. A wonderful confluence of both Hinduism and Buddhism can be seen on the land of Kinnaur. People of Hindu religion come here to have the darshan of Lord Shiva. There are many stories about Pandavas also prevalent here. Apart from this, many old monasteries and temples of Buddhism are built here. There are many places for tourists like Nako, Narkanda, Sangla, Sarahan etc.
