Jaipur: Jai Ram Thakur was born on January 6, 1965, in Tindi village of Thunag tehsil of Mandi. His father Jhethu Ram worked as a mason and Thakur studied in the village school. He graduated from Vallabh Government College, Mandi in 1987 and did his post-graduation from Panjab University, Chandigarh. Thakur’s political career began with a defeat in the 1993 assembly elections but went on to win six consecutive assembly elections. He won from Chachiot in the years 1998, 2003 and 2007 and from the Seraj seat in 2012, 2017, and 2023. Jairam Thakur joined the RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in college and held various positions including state secretary and organizational secretary of Jammu and Kashmir.
Before becoming the Vice President and President of the State BJP, he was also the State President of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM). In 2009, he was inducted into the state BJP government headed by Prem Kumar Dhumal and made the Minister of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj. He was the first person to become the Chief Minister from the Mandi district. In 2017, the BJP won nine out of 10 seats in his Mandi district. In 2013, he contested the Lok Sabha by-election from the Mandi seat but lost to Pratibha Singh, the current Congress state president and wife of former chief minister Virbhadra Singh. At present Mr. Thakur is holding the responsibility of the Leader of the Opposition in the 14th Legislative Assembly of Himachal Pradesh.
