Jaipur: Today is a big and inspiring day for all the women and girls. It is the birthday of a woman who not only became the first woman governor of the country, but also joined the freedom struggle with Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore. Yes, we are talking about Sarojini Naidu.

Life of Sarojini Naidu: –

Sarojini Naidu was born on 13 February 1879 in a Bengali family in Hyderabad. Her father’s name was Aghornath Chatopadhyay, who was a scientist by profession. Her mother Ward Sundari Devi was a writer. Naidu did her schooling from Presidency College and went to King’s College, London for higher studies. At that time inter-caste marriage was considered unacceptable in the society.Ignoring the society, Naidu married Muttayala Govindarajulu Naidu, who belonged to a different caste. Mrs. Naidu died on March 2, 1949.

Political Life:
Smt. Naidu was an important leader in movements like Civil Disobedience Movement and Quit India Movement which were convened by Mahatma Gandhi. In the Congress session held in Kanpur in 1925, Sarojini Naidu became the first woman to preside over the Congress. Not only this, she was also the Governor of Uttar Pradesh from 15 August 1947 to 2 March 1949.
