National Sports Day is celebrated in India on August 29, the birth anniversary of hockey wizard Major Dhyan Chand. National Sports Day was classified as a festival in India for the first time in 2012. In 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also launched the Khelo India Movement on this day. The purpose of celebrating this day was to bring awareness about the importance of sports, for this purpose many sports competitions are organized on this day. Not just this, National Sports Day is an occasion when the country’s talented athletes are honored with recognitions like Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Arjuna Award, Dhyan Chand Award and Dronacharya Award.
On this day in a special function held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President of India gives these awards. On this day, many types of sports competitions are organized in schools and colleges. In which children get information about sports awareness and staying away from cruel anomalies like drugs. In today’s time, when children are more inclined towards online games, the importance of this day increases further. Sports are very important in promoting physical and mental energy in children, for today’s generation who are suffering from mental stress, different types of sports are like a medicine.
