World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is observed every year on June 17 to spread awareness about international efforts to combat desertification. The day provides an opportunity to recognize that land degradation neutrality can be achieved through problem solving, strong community participation, and collaboration at all levels.

World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought 2024: Significance of World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought

During the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, desertification was identified as one of the greatest challenges to sustainable development, along with climate change and biodiversity loss.

Two years later in 1994, the General Assembly established the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the only legally binding international agreement linking environment and development to sustainable land management and declared June 17 as the “World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought”.

Later in 2007, the United Nations General Assembly declared the year 2010-2020 as the United Nations Decade to Combat Desertification and the Fight against Desertification, to mobilize global cooperation to combat land degradation under the leadership of the UNCCD Secretariat.

What is desertification.

Land degradation occurs in arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid regions. It is mainly caused by human activities and climate change.

It does not refer to the expansion of existing deserts. This is because dryland ecosystems, which cover more than one-third of the world’s land area, are extremely vulnerable to overexploitation and inappropriate land use.

Additionally, poverty, political instability, deforestation, overgrazing and poor irrigation practices can all reduce land productivity.
