Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu’s political career began with the NSUI, the student wing of the Congress, where he became the General Secretary of the Student Central Association at Sanjauli College, Shimla. He was then made the President of the Sanjauli Government College Students’ Central Union, and from there on He made a place as a strong youth leader. In the year 1988, he was elected the State President of NSUI. After this, in the year 1995, he was given the responsibility of State General Secretary of Congress. Due to his strong hold in student politics of Sukhu, he was the President of Youth Congress for 10 consecutive years from 1998 to 2008. In the year 2008, took over as the State General Secretary of Congress. Sukhu also served as a corporator of Shimla Municipal Corporation for 2 terms.
In the year 2003, for the first time, he contested from Nadaun assembly constituency and won the election and reached the assembly. After this, he was again MLA in 2007, 2017 and 2022.
In the year 2013, the Congress High Command gave him the responsibility of the President of Himachal Pradesh Congress and he remained in this post till the year 2019. In the 2017 Himachal assembly elections, BJP candidate Vijay Agnihotri was in front of Sukhu, he won by 2,349 votes and in the year 2022, Sukhwinder Singh got 36,142 votes and Vijay Agnihotri got 32,779 votes, but this time also won by 3,363 votes. Due to his good relations with the Congress high command, he was given the charge of the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh after the victory of the Congress party in the 2022 Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections.
Recently, on 12th June, on International Child Labor Prohibition Day, a special children’s session was organized in the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly, in which Mr. Sukhu participated as the chief guest. The program was presided over by Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly Speaker Mr. Kuldeep Singh Pathania. Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha Shri Harivansh Narayan Singh attended this special session as a special guest. In this children’s session, 68 children were selected from all over the country, who conducted this children’s session as child legislators, chief ministers, ministers, speakers and leaders of the opposition.
