Know about International Day of the United Nations Peacekeepers.
Child Writer Paras Mali.
As we celebrate the International Day of the United Nations Peacekeepers on 29 May, I would like to pay tribute to the brave men and women who have selflessly served as peacekeepers far from home and on foreign soil to maintain international peace and security. This year, we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. In this momentous year, the invaluable contribution made by UN peacekeepers throughout the history of this Organization must be well recognised.
I salute the dedication, courage and resourcefulness of the brave men and women who have served in UN peacekeeping operations. I also pay tribute to those who have dedicated their lives to the cause of peace. In particular, I offer my heartfelt condolences to the families of the 126 peacekeepers, including two from India, who made the ultimate sacrifice in 2014.
India is justifiably proud of its long and rich tradition of contributing to UN peacekeeping operations to maintain international peace and security. India has contributed nearly 180,000 troops over the years, the largest number from any country. 160 Indian peacekeepers have laid down their lives while serving the UN.
I would also like to take this opportunity to recall the fundamental principles of peacekeeping that have sustained it as a mechanism for maintaining international peace and security, such as consent of the parties, impartiality and non-use of force, except in self-defence, and protection of the mandate. These principles remain as relevant today as they have always been, and form the core of the respect and honour that Blue Helmets have earned for themselves.
